Taylor plays down Serrano's proposed longer rounds

Undisputed lightweight world champion Katie Taylor dismissed opponent Amanda Serrano's suggestion for three-minute rounds in their upcoming historic bout in New York.

Seven weight world champion Serrano was eager to change how long the fight was to make a stand and create future change for women’s boxing as she is “a woman for equality.”

“The event is already iconic the way it is, the fact that the pre-sales are the second best in history says it all really,” Taylor countered.

“This proves that the perceptions have already changed.”

Taylor, who won her belts in 2019, will defend her lightweight world titles against the 33-year-old Puerto Rican Serrano at Madison Square Garden on April 30th, the first time two female boxers have headlined the iconic New York venue.

“The winner of this fight is going to be the pound for pound best fighter,” Taylor said.

“We are already making a stand by taking the fight in the first place.

“I know I am not short on heart or grit, and I know my mind can take me to places that I have no right to go.

“That question has been answered but I don’t think Amanda has answered that question.

“I think her legacy will answer that,” she said.

Taylor’s promoter Eddie Hearn also said that the divide between men and women in boxing is changing.

“At the end of the day if you are entertaining regardless of your sex, it is completely irrelevant.

“Forget gender we are just seeing great fights these are tremendous pound for pound greats,” he said.

Hearn further said that “if the fight was big enough it will be done again” stating that he expects the fight to happen “one, two or three times.”
