Hungary hold on against Northern Ireland

A mistake from Niall McGinn was the difference in Belfast as Hungary beat Northern Ireland 1-0.


The goal was scored by Roland Sallai as he rounded a stranded Peacock-Farrell from a short back pass.


Northern Ireland had late chances by George Saville and Dion Charles but they were saved by the impressive Dénes Dibusz.


Next up for Northern Ireland is the Nations League in June.


Hungary travelled to Windsor Park for the first time since that Kyle Lafferty’s last gasp goal in Northern Irelands famous Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.


The green and white army looked to make it two wins out of two during this international break following their 3-1 victory in Luxenberg.


The first chance of the night fell to captain Steven Davis after 11 minutes who pounced on a loose ball and shot with the outside of his boot. Although his curling effort hit the post with Hungary keeper Dibusz beaten.


Northern Ireland continued to control possession in the early stages but struggled to create any meaningful chances. A positive came in debutant Paddy Lane, the Fleetwood Town youngster looked more than comfortable at international level.


On 34 minutes Bailey Peacock-Farrell was tested for the first time through a shot from Sallai but the effort was easily saved by Northern Irish number one.


The green and white army were keen to make it five clean sheets in a row at Windsor Park.


On 41 mins Gavin Whyte flicked the ball into McGinn who has his shot brilliantly tipped around the post by Dibusz. The new look Northern Ireland front three linking well together for the first time.


The deadlock failed to be broken as both sides went in even at the break.


McGinn mistake

Straight after half time Northern Ireland had a big penalty claim as substitute Charles was taken down by Ádám Lang. However, referee Robert Harvey judged there to be not enough contact.


Hungary opened the scoring following a mistake from McGinn on 55 minutes who sold Peacock-Farrell short with a back pass which Sallai took fully advantage of. The Hungarian rounded Peacock-Farrell and passed the ball into an empty net.


Northern Ireland had gone the whole of World Cup qualifying without conceding a goal at home.

As the hour mark passed Ian Baraclough made two changes bringing on Saville and Stuart Dallas to change the game. Steven Davis made way to complete his 134th cap with Lane making way at the opposite end of his career.


Sunderland player Trai Hume on 83 minutes got a fantastic reception as he came on for Daniel Ballard to make his international debut.


Busy finale

Just moments later Dallas provide a brilliant cross from the left wing, which was flicked on by Shayne Lavery, but it went just beyond Charles.


In a busy finale Saville had his free header saved on 87 minutes with also Hume coming close from a header a minute later. Dibusz denying what would have been a dream debut.


In stoppage time in Charles had a golden opportunity to win the game as the ball dropped to him. However it was brilliantly saved again.


Northern Ireland will next be in action for the Nations League in June. They are in a group with Greece, Kosovo and Cyprus.
